In practice, this means that a fuel quality certificate alone is no longer sufficient. Full documentation of the supply chain is required — from plantation and production to delivery to the final customer.
EUDR — Biomass Without Deforestation
The EUDR — EU Deforestation-Free Products Regulation — goes even further. It introduces a requirement that all plant-based products, including energy biomass, must be free from links to deforestation.
Every biomass importer and producer will have to:
- document the exact origin of the raw material,
- indicate the geolocation of the plantation,
- guarantee that cultivation did not contribute to the degradation of forests or areas of high natural value.
This is a major change for the global market, especially in the context of supplies from Asia and South America. At the same time, it creates an opportunity for companies that are able to provide full supply chain transparency — from plantation to combined heat and power plant.
